Chief Security Officer of Former President Koroma Sentenced to 44 Years Following Conviction
Date: July 23, 2024
In a significant legal development, Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda of the Court of Appeal has sentenced the Chief Security Officer of former President Ernest Bai Koroma to 44 years in prison. This sentence comes after a 12-man jury unanimously found the accused, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ibrahim Sesay, guilty of two serious charges: Misprision of Treason and Harbouring.
ASP Ibrahim Sesay, who served as the Chief Security Officer for former President Koroma both in Freetown and Makeni, was initially a military officer. His distinguished service led to his transition into the police force, a move facilitated by the trust and confidence placed in him by President Koroma upon assuming office in 2007. Despite his service to the former President, ASP Sesay's tenure came under scrutiny following serious allegations related to national security.
The charges against ASP Sesay were related to his alleged involvement in the November 26 attempted coup, during which a group of military personnel attacked a military armoury and two military barracks. The violent insurrection resulted in the deaths of over 70 individuals before state authorities managed to regain control. It was alleged that ASP Sesay harboured Torlu Bangura, one of the key figures involved in the coup attempt, thereby implicating him in the broader conspiracy.
Although former President Koroma faced charges of Treason among other offences, he did not undergo trial due to international diplomatic interventions. His departure to Nigeria for medical treatment was facilitated through negotiations by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), highlighting the complexities surrounding the case.
The trial proceedings concluded with a notable expression of gratitude from the defence counsel towards Judge Kamanda. M. Pious Sesay Esq. acknowledged the judge's commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent process. Defence attorneys Ady Macauley, Africanus Sesay, and F. Mansaray collectively commended the court for allowing both the prosecution and the defence ample opportunity to present their cases without hindrance.
In the coming days, Kailondo will provide a detailed profile of all the convicted individuals, including a thorough analysis of their offences and the evidence presented during the trial. This will include comprehensive updates on the remaining 11 individuals who were convicted alongside ASP Sesay.
This landmark case underscores the judiciary's role in addressing serious breaches of national security and ensuring that justice is served. The sentencing of ASP Ibrahim Sesay marks a critical moment in Sierra Leone's legal landscape, reinforcing the importance of accountability and the rule of law.
